  1. Allow Recrawling Indexed Search Databases Directly from PI Vision

As a PI Vision user, I would like PI Vision to have the ability to initiate a PI Web API Indexed Search database recrawl from the PI Vision web application itself, instead of requiring an administrator to navigate to the Indexed Search Admin page to do this. This would allow users to make newly created assets appear in the search results on demand. This ability could be limited to a specific set of privileged users.

This would pose a significant security concern so I have to decline it. On the other hand, I’d like to know what you are trying to accomplish and how we can help. PI Vision 2017 R2 SP1 (the latest version) allows display authors to define text font size and color.

  3. After moving displays to a folder, the display owner should be able to maintain read-access

Currently, after moving a display to a folder, a display owner will lose write permissions to the display if they do not have write permissions to the folder. It would be easier if display owners automatically had write permissions to displays even if they are moved to a new folder.

If admins wish to control access to certain folders, it may be better to configure that as a setting for the folder (ie a setting where "Only folder permissions are considered for security to displays) or they can change the display owner.

The behavior is by design, and I think, is intuitive and expected by most users. Take Windows operating system for example, if you create a file on your desktop, and move it to a folder to which you don’t have write access, you will lose write access to that file as well.

On the other hand, the behavior you proposed would pose a security concern. Therefore, I have declined it.

  4. internet explorer vs Chrome

I realize that this very well may be out of OSIsoft's control. However the very noticeable performance difference between Internet Explorer and Chrome on displays, particularly ones utilizing many objects is problematic. Internet Explorer is still such a heavily used browser within the organization. Its confusing for many since we would recommend Chrome usage, but that results in users having to juggle applications requiring IE in the organization and Chrome.

PI Vision is built and tested to function when visited by any of its supported browsers, but may not have equal performance on each browser.

As a modern web application, PI Vision relies on client-side JavaScript execution in browsers to provide a fast and smooth experience for users. JavaScript execution is completely dependent on the interpretation, compilation, and run-time code provided by the browser’s JavaScript engine. As such, browsers with faster JavaScript engines will provide faster performance in PI Vision.

  5. Set individual database update interval for PI Web API Search Crawler

Currently the update interval is set on a global level.

If a user has an extremely large database, it would be nice to set that large database's update interval individually.  That way increasing the Update Interval doesn't affect all databases.  Especially is other databases are updated much more rapidly.

  6. Remove HTTPS Requirement

Is there any way to make this run in HTTP mode only?  It seems to want to default to HTTPS, but there isn't any real way to make a certificate from an authority work since this isn't an internet-facing server.  Most browsers harbor an extreme distaste for self-signed certs.

In general, the entire World Wide Web is moving away from HTTP to HTTPS for security. In fact, more and more websites only allow connections via HTTPS, which is also adopted as a standard by an increasing number of our customers. As OSIsoft is committed to delivering most security products to our customers, we are obliged to use HTTPS and to be rid of HTTP.

  7. PI Vision install kit should include AF Client 2017 SP2

The PI Vision 2017 install kit includes an older version of PI AF Client (2.9.0.8065).

There should be a new PI Vision install kit that includes the latest PI AF client 2017 SP2 (2.9.2.8185) that fixes some issues that was found in the older version.

    This would simplify installation steps.

  8. PI Vision (Search crawler) configuration option to automatically index new AF database.

Request for a feature in PI Vision (search crawler) to automatically index new AF databases for a given AF Server. This allows for a seamless process between building out AF hierarchy and being able to visualize the data in PI Vision. Currently   users (database architects whom may not have PI Vision admin access) must wait for PIVision (or WebAPI) admin to add the database for indexing.

  9. Configure Vision Display to Force Secure https Access

Add the ability via a checkbox to the display page properties (ie: keywords, owner, who can view, read-only setting, etc) to force access to that display as https rather than http. This would provide a couple different benefits...

    (A) for displays that contain an XY Plot or Events Table, which require an https connection, it will prevent a user from accessing the page using http only and find it to not work correctly.

    (B) for displays that contain more sensitive data, it will prevent non-SSL access to the page.

It is recommended that HTTPS be enabled and enforced at the web site level. By default, PI Vision will be configured to use HTTPS, however, if you install to a site that has an existing HTTP binding this will not be removed during the installation process.

Enforcing HTTPS can be done done in IIS Manager by removing any HTTP bindings on the PI Vision web site and by enabling the ‘Require SSL’ setting.

As of PI Vision 2019, the XY Plot and Events Table symbols use the same data access mechanism as the other symbols so there are no longer differences in the connections that different symbols require.

  10. Include a link to the PI Web API Search Admin page from the PI Vision Admin page

The PI Web API Search Admin page, particularly the Databases tab, ha a lot more information and is much more helpful for monitoring or troubleshooting the crawled databases than the Overview and Configuration tabs in the PI Vision Administration page.

Since the Web API Admin site's URL is difficult to remember (https://localhost/piwebapi/admin/search/database.html), it would be beneficial to have a link to the page from within the Vision Admin page, or a new page on the Vision Admin site that contains the same detailed information on the crawled databases.

  11. PI Vision and PI ProcessBook macro support

As a PI Vision and PI ProcessBook user, I would like to have VBA code support on PI Vision, or Web API code embedded on a PI ProcessBook display so I can publish a single display with macros on PI Vision.

While we won’t be supporting PI ProcessBook VBA macros within PI Vision, PI Vision does support extensible symbols and toolpanes created for use with native PI Vision displays.

  12. Remove the grey selection box in view mode

In view mode (not edit mode) the grey selection boxes show the current / selected symbol. When you start layering symbols or use hidden symbols, that becomes quite useless for the user and can cause confusion. The purpose of showing the selected symbol only makes sense when the symbols allows e.g. keyboard input. And even then the user interaction is doubtful.

Please remove the grey selection boxes in normal viewing mode.

Unfortunately it’s impossible to translate VBA into something a web browser will allow you to do. PI Vision does have it’s own extensibility model, but it is based on web development (JavaScript).

  15. Text Editing in CoreSight 2016 beta

In the 2016 Beta, is it possible to edit text once entered, or must it be deleted and re added ? It would be useful to adjust the text size, and ideally have an italic font as well as a standard font such as is already in use.

  16. Trend: Show Child Events (EF) on a Trend

I want to view child events like phases for a production run on the trend so that I can clearly see where these phases start and end in relation to the continuous data.

One visualization example for this is to draw a vertical line at the start of each child event and place the name of the child event vertically along the line. This is another way to visualize child events rather than an aligned Gantt Chart.
