Correction to earlier comment by Matt Ziegler: This idea was not fulfilled in PI Integrator for Business Analytics 2018 release. This idea is currently not planned for a future release. If you have a use case and desired behavior for a particular writer and want to discuss further, please comment below or email me. Thank you!

i'm unsure what 'use case' you are looking for beyond the initial idea. The scenario in the idea is still a valid concern.

If a PIIntegrator View to a non-PI View target (like a generic SQL database) is deleted, the corresponding Database Table remains in the SQL Database . . . which is thus confusing for users accessing the views via a SQL connection (like PowerBI).

The entire concept of using Integrator adds a lot of moving parts between data in PI to data accessible to something like PowerBI . . . without then adding additional items like a dedicated PI ODBC driver and configuring a new Data Source on the users computer to access the PI Views . . . thus the reasoning with using a generic SQL target.

Thanks for checking. I am upgrading from 2016 to 2018 this week sometime.

While I think the issues presented by old tables not being deleted when the View is deleted is drastically reduced by the ability to modify existing views . . . this still presents a long term manageability concern.

I don't see any mention of this in 2016R2SP1 release notes nor in the 2018 release notes. Has it been completed?

This sort of sounds like the custom object from GitHub; Advanced Time Series Data Table. It would be nice if this object was made a more official symbol with other improvements somewhat mentioned here, like customizing the look and feel of the table

I was not referring tables in reference to Excel Tables as the specific object, I was more referring to a general 2-dimensional table of data, a matrix of data.

A table of data would be multiple tags where the values from these multiple tags are associated/related to each other based on a common timestamp. This information can be retrieved into a 'table' like format using multiple datalink functions, typically a combination of Compressed Data and Timed Data (using exact time due to not wanting to accidentally interpolate for data missing). The issue is the inability to utilize a single Datalink function.

Using a single Timed Data function across multiple tags is only possible with knowledge of the expected timestamps, which is not always possible . . . usually not possible. Using a single Compressed Data function will give incorrect results because of any missing values on one or more tags . . . the rows will become mismatched from each other.

Thus retrieving this data into Excel ends up being much more complicated and fraught with pitfalls and traps for any users that have not given very careful consideration of the data structure and the exact behavior of datalink functions . . . and i say that based on experience of having many users having issues in this specific area.

I believe you are correct that the "Update" button accomplishes the task, recalculate without resize. I think the confusion comes from the lack of consistency in the naming of the functions and fully realizing what each function accomplishes.

Task Pane - "OK" button -
Right Click Menu - "Recalculate (Resize) Function" -
    Datalink Ribbon - "Update" button
    Formula Ribbon - "Calculate"
    Keyboard - pressing F9 (or shift+F9 or crtl+alt+shift+F9)
Excel Sheet - select a single function/formula and pressing "enter" (or crtl+shift+enter for arrays)

6 different ways a user could attempt an 'update'. None of which use common terminology and they all tend to behave slightly different; updating all functions vs one, resize vs not resize, dependency tree rebuild, etc. Thus maybe this idea would be more useful as an attempt to bring clarity to this problem in a way that is intuitive for the average and new user

agreed . . . one of PIAF's biggest short comings in comparison to Excel Datalink is not having an easy, intuitive way to do any of the calculation functions with a filter. I understand it can be done with multiple analyses, but that approach gets messy with all the extra outputs and analyses that are simply intermediate values.
