Thank you for your input. PI Adapter for OPC UA does support specific DA tag naming, as you can supply custom stream names. Please take a look at Kevin Geneva’s comment under this post of how this is handled through PI Web API.

Looking for more inputs on how to determine what the last good value is (was). While it’s simple to say a numeric value is good, but what if it’s a non-sensical numeric value like 1000 for temperature? It is also possible to the source system to send out status like NoData. How should that be interpreted? Please provide your inputs.

I'd like to clarify using the example under "Complete data selection configuration" on this page: https://docs.osisoft.com/bundle/pi-adapter-opc-ua/page/configuration/data-selection.html
In this example, the "name" field is set to "CustomStreamName" - if there is a tag on the Data Archive called "CustomStreamName", the PI Adapter and PI Web API will "adopt" that PI Tag and change its configuration. Since the Name field is fully customizable, you should be able to continue writing to any PI Tag on your system. Only if the PI Web API cannot find a matching tagname will it create a new PI Tag.
